1 dead, 5 injured after car plows into Austin, Texas hospital emergency room

A car crashed into a Texas hospital Tuesday afternoon, killing the driver and injuring five people in the lobby – including a child who is now fighting for his life, authorities said.

The sedan crashed into North Austin Medical Center in St. David at about 5:38 p.m. local time and ended up in the emergency room lobby, photos obtained by KXAN show.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and given CPR by both hospital and EMS personnel, but was pronounced dead at the scene, Austin Fire Chief Thayer Smith said during a press conference outside the hospital.

Austin police said that the collision appears to have been accidental based on preliminary information.

Five people were injured in the crash – including two adults and two children who were taken to another hospital for treatment. The fifth was treated at the scene.

A child was rushed to Dell Children’s Hospital with critical life-threatening injuries and an adult was sent to Round Rock Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries.

The other adults and children transported suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Austin Travis County EMS officials.

The wreck also did not allow hospital emergency room service for the night.

Eight people were treated in the ER of St. David at the time of the crash was transferred to another medical facility for treatment while officials assessed the scene — and to allow the hospital to “regroup better,” the facility’s chief medical officer said.

The emergency department was closed to patients brought by ambulance and EMS as a result of the accident but still allowed in, said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Peter DeYoung at the press conference.

“Obviously this is a big deal… We hope to regroup here and see where the morning leaves us,” DeYoung said, adding that they are setting up an alternate entrance for triage.

Fortunately the building was not badly damaged and “appears to be in good condition.”

The damage was largely isolated to the exterior doors of the building and the aquarium inside the lobby was also broken.

DeYoung said that no department other than the ER has been affected.

Officials are investigating the crash and have not released any details about the cause of the crash.
