100 dead, nearly 1,000 injured after 6.3 magnitude earthquakes rock Afghanistan

About 100 people were killed and nearly 1,000 injured after two 6.3-magnitude earthquakes shook western Afghanistan Saturday, according to reports and the United Nations.

The death toll is confirmed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The epicenter, which struck around noon local time, was about 25 miles northwest of the city of Herat, near the Iranian border. The aftershock brought a 5.5 magnitude tremor.

Images and videos of villages flattened, mud houses reduced to rubble and blankets placed over bodies were shared on social media as residents flocked to the roads following the disaster and makeshift hospitals were set up.

“Everyone came out of their houses,” said Herat city resident Abdul Shakor Samadi.

“Houses, offices and shops are all empty and there are fears of more earthquakes. My family and I were inside our house, I felt the earthquake.”

The World Health Organization said it sent 12 ambulances to the town of Zinda Jan to evacuate victims.

“As deaths & injuries from the earthquake continue to be reported, teams are in hospitals assisting with the treatment of the injured & assessing additional needs,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“WHO-supported ambulances are transporting those affected, mostly women and children.”

In June 2022, a powerful earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan and killed at least 1,000 and injured about 1,500.
