Which crime is 12 Desperate Hours based on?
12 Dangerous Hours tells the story of an armed criminal who holds up a family and forces his mother to drive him on a night of brutal violence and evil plans. The story is similar to that of Gary Lee Quinlivan, who was eventually convicted of second-degree murder, first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.
The offense began in Washington state in 1963, when Joan Marlatt ended her relationship with then-boyfriend Quinlivan, who was unhappy. To contact his old friend, who lived with his mother, he enlisted the help of an acquaintance, Fritz Donahue. According to accounts, Quinlivan accidentally killed his friend when he fell in the ground and his gun went off.
Postmortem showed the following:
“[Donahue] died of a shotgun wound to the head, with a wound in a horizontal plane, a fact consistent with the pistol being held at shoulder level and fired directly at the deceased.”
Quinlivan then fled into the woods and outside Patricia Jean Jaque’s house, where he forced her to drive him. The plot of 12 Desperate Hours was influenced by this. Here is an excerpt from the film’s synopsis:
“Val agrees to take Denny wherever he wants and be his reluctant partner as he wreaks havoc to save them and her husband Mark (David Conrad), who will be home at any moment. Despite the horrific event, Val develops a relationship with her captor and uses it to save the lives of witnesses, herself, and her captor (2023).
Last Dance, Last Chance and Other True Cases: Crime Report Vol. 8 also includes a disturbing account of this event. Gina Gershon told KTLA 5 about the situation:
“It touched me… I’m just tired of reading about another fatal murder in the news. It saddens me to think that these children go to school and may never go. It’s just terrible; America has failed as a civilization, and things are not getting any better.”
Lifetime will debut 12 Desperate Hours on February 25, 2023, at 8pm EDT. It is also accessible for next-day viewing.
