13 injured in 43-vehicle crash after Chesapeake Bay Bridge covered in thick fog

MARYLAND – A 40-vehicle crash on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Saturday morning left 13 people injured and remains under investigation in Maryland.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) police were notified of a multi-vehicle crash at 8 a.m. Saturday on the westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge.

Police said 23 vehicles were involved in the westbound chain crash.

About 20 additional vehicles were involved in a series of secondary crashes.

According to officials, two patients were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Eleven additional patients were also transported to local hospitals.

Officials said there were no injuries believed to be life-threatening.

The westbound span was reopened to traffic at approximately 1:50 p.m

Traffic is alternating in the eastbound direction while the westbound direction is closed.

Officials said early morning fog caused delays in two-way operations due to fog and limited visibility.

MDTA officials said the westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge remained closed until noon as a result of the collision. Tow operators are actively working to clear the vehicle from the scene.
