A 13-year-old boy is accused of killing a Colorado grandfather over a dispute he blocked a lane on a public bus last week when relatives were told he had died when they tried to file a missing persons report days later.
Richard Sanchez, 60, was killed just a few blocks from his home while riding a JPJ bus last Saturday night after he allegedly got into an argument with a teenage boy, according to Fox 31.
The shooting happened around 6:41 pm at the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue — about 3 miles from Empower Field at Mile High, the Denver Broncos’ stadium.
Sanchez was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A second person was injured and treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, police said.
Less than a week after the heartless murder, police arrested a 13-year-old suspect in connection with Sanchez’s killing on Thursday.
Police believe the argument between the alleged killer and Sanchez started because the elderly man was blocking the aisle with his foot.

“At this stage of the investigation, it appears that there was a verbal exchange between the suspect and the victim regarding the victim’s leg blocking the way on the bus, and the suspect then shot the victim,” the Denver Police Department said Friday.
The grandfather’s family were not informed he had been killed until they went to the police the following Monday to report him missing.
“It’s hard because we don’t know where he is, and the whole time, he’s in the hospital, and they don’t call us,” Sanchez’s grandson, Joseph Chavez, told the outlet Tuesday.
“No one was there with him when he took his last breath.”

Chavez said the senseless killing of his grandfather had left him “very heartbroken” and the whole situation “felt unreal.”
“He was always happy. He was a very happy man,” Chavez said of his loved one.
The teenage suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, police said.
The Denver District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination of charges, according to the outlet.
At least 178 passengers were reported assaulted or injured while using JPJ transit in 2021 and the first two months of 2022, according to JPJ records shared by Fox 31.
Through 2023, Denver averages 6.0 murders per month.
