13-year-old boy dies 10 days after getting hit by car while sledding down driveway

A 13-year-old Iowa boy has died 10 days after being hit by an SUV while sledding near his home, according to police and family.

Adam McWherter’s snow day turned tragic when he mistakenly opened an Anamosa driveway onto the road on Jan. 10 while sledding with a friend, authorities said, according to reports.

His friend, 11, noticed the approaching car and bailed out of his sled, but didn’t get McWherter’s attention to stop quickly, according to a police report obtained by the Gazette.

“(The 11-year-old) didn’t think McWherter saw the car until McWherter got about 10-15 feet from the end of the driveway, and he put his hand down to stop,” according to police documents.

As the driver of the GMC Envoy hit the brakes, the vehicle was unable to stop before hitting the pre-teen, police said.

“He was not alone and received treatment quickly but immediately passed out. His pulse is weak and fading,” said a friend of the child’s mother on the GoFundMe page. “Paramedics were able to revive his heart after about 20 minutes with him in the ambulance at the base of our driveway.”

McWherter was taken to the hospital with a broken collarbone, broken pelvis, broken spine and strained ligaments in his neck, the family friend said.

Connected to a ventilator, he also suffered minor bleeding in his skull and some blood in his lungs while dealing with several minor seizures, the fundraising page said.

The 7th grader was pronounced dead Saturday, police said, according to the Kansas City Star.

McWherter and his friend raced toward a snowbank near the bottom of the hill, the friend told police, according to documents obtained by the Gazette.

They didn’t plan to go on the road because it was too dangerous, the younger boy said.

The driver told the Iowa State Patrol he didn’t see the boy speeding until it was too late, the Gazette reported, citing police documents.

The SUV continued to skid following the collision and fell into a ditch.

Police are trying to recreate the scene to see if the driver’s version of the incident makes sense.

A deputy with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office was riding a sled in the driveway as a state trooper took video from the road in his police pickup truck, according to a police report.

McWherter enjoyed sports, the outdoors and was always up for an adventure, his obituary said.

“He loved his family and spent time with them. Adam enjoyed hearing old stories, learning from his grandparents and great-grandparents,” the obit said. “He adored his friends and enjoyed every moment he could spend with them.”

No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
