A 14-year-old boy died over the weekend while running a 5K race at a Florida high school.
The teenager, identified by his family as Knox MacEwen, apparently suffered a heart attack while jogging at Everglades High School Saturday morning, Miramar police told NBC6-South Florida.
Emergency personnel arrived at the high school at about 9 a.m. and rushed MacEwen to Miramar Memorial, but he could not be saved.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the outlet.
The boy is a student at Western High School in Davie and is competing for JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) training.
The high school principal announced his death to the school community and said grief counselors will be available to students on campus throughout the week.

“One of our JROTC students died this morning after being sent to the hospital. I want to extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, teachers and classmates as they mourn this great loss,” West High Principal Jimmy Arrojo said in a message obtained by a local station.
Pastor MacEwen at Crossway Church in Cooper City said the teenager was loved by many, making his death a far-reaching and devastating loss.
“Knox’s father said to me a few days ago, that Knox is the best of us, and I like that phrase because if you know Knox, that’s what he is, right, this is a teenager that when you think of him, you think of a child a loving, a loving child, a funny child,” said Pastor Jon Elswick.

A family friend launched a GoFundMe that raised more than $66,000 that will be donated to the family to help with funeral expenses and allow the child’s parents to take time off to grieve.
The GoFundMe description also tragically notes that the teen’s mother, Julie, is “still recovering physically and financially from her intense battle with cancer last year.”
