16-year-old ran personal best before collapsing, dying at Texas cross-country meet

A Texas teenager tragically collapsed and died at a cross country meet after breaking her personal time record, according to local reports.

Angel Hernandez, a sophomore at Chisholm Trail High School, had just finished a 5K at a county track event in Haltom City in Tarrant County on Oct. 13 when she collapsed shortly after crossing the finish line, witnesses told KHOU.

Concerned friends of the teenager took him to the water fountain where he fell again. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died an hour later.

Brent Brevard, who coached Hernandez at Chisholm Trail High School last year before retiring, said he was the ideal student athlete.

“He works hard and cares about his teammates,” he told the outlet.

“But then he also acts right in school and takes care of his grades.”

“He’s a great kid, a likable kid, a good student, and it’s terrible news,” Brevard added.

Friends and family still don’t know what caused the teenager to collapse after running one of his best races.

Hernandez’s funeral was held Friday, where his family was presented with a varsity letter jacket, KHOU reported. That night at the high school football game, a silence was created in his memory.

The teenager also had a passion for martial arts, according to his obituary, and competed in competitions across the country.

His karate coach, Ashley Wood, said he had been comforting his devastated teammates since his death. He said he showed no signs of illness before he collapsed.

“He makes you love him with his personality,” he told KHOU. “He had an infectious smile. In his quiet moments, it helped us know that he was loved by everyone.”

Wood launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the Hernandez family cover funeral costs.

“It is hard. We will not be able to overcome it. We will never forget it. He will be missed here, but he will always be loved,” he said.

Hernandez is survived by his parents, Antonio and Elsie Hernandez, and his younger brother, Mark Hernandez.
