2 Florida deputies hit, critically injured by motorist in ‘ambush’ attack

A motorist intentionally hit a pair of Florida deputies who were seriously injured in an “ambush” attack Thursday morning, according to authorities and shocking footage of the crash.

Hillsborough County Deputy Manuel Santos, 31, and Corporal Carlos Brito, 39, were standing in front of their police cruiser on a residential street when the driver sped toward them, the footage shows.

The deputies did not have enough time to escape danger and one of them hit the windshield of the car after he tried to jump out of the way, according to a graphic video released by authorities.

Two deputies were seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while on a call for service on Nov. 9, 2023, in Brandon, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office

The car driven by Ralph Bouzy, 28, then stopped after crashing into a police car.

The sheriff’s office responded to the suspect’s home where he lived with his mother after he called for help because he was behaving violently, the law enforcement agency said in a news release.

When sheriff’s personnel arrived around 7:45 a.m., Bouzy was driving, authorities said.

But after 8 a.m., he returned and took aim directly at deputies, the sheriff’s office said.

“There is no other way to describe this than an ambush,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement.

“Our deputies put their lives on the line every day to protect this community and what happened today makes me truly sick.”

Two other deputies already at the scene chased Bouzy after he got out of his car, and tackled him when he refused to surrender, authorities said.

“Taser, taser, taser,” a deputy can be heard yelling on body cam video moments before the Taser was used. “Go to the ground right now.”

The suspect fell down after being beaten and detained, according to the footage.

Bouzy, who has a criminal history, is charged with three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer with more charges possible, the sheriff’s office said.

He had previously been arrested on three felonies and 14 misdemeanors, according to authorities.

Brito and Santos were both taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious and critical injuries.

“Corporal Brito and Deputy Santos came to work today committed to making a difference in their communities,” Sheriff Chronister also stated.

“Because of these men’s willful and deliberate actions, their lives, and the lives of their families were changed forever.”

Brito has been with the department since 2013 and Santos since 2019.
