2-year-old boy believed to be youngest person ever to reach Everest base camp

A toddler aged just 2 is believed to be the youngest person ever to reach Mount Everest base camp – after his parents decided to take him “on a whim”.

Carter Dallas, from Glasgow in Scotland, reached the site of 17,598 feet above sea level behind his father on Oct. 25.

He is two years younger than the previous youngest person known to have reached the camp, a 4-year-old from the Czech Republic.

Carter’s father, Ross Dallas, said that he and his wife, Jade, took several jackets and sleeping bags in preparation for the adventure, saying they “basically did it on a whim” during the year-long trip across Asia.

“Within 24 hours of landing in Kathmandu, we started our journey,” says the father, who wears his usual hiking shoes, as does his wife.

“Carter coped better than me and his mom,” Dallas said, adding that the medics who checked on the 2-year-old son throughout the trip were “amazed” by his condition.

“We both had a bit of altitude sickness but he’s fine!”

Dallas, a 35-year-old former senior sales manager, said that he and his family were prepared because they regularly practiced breathing techniques and ice baths.

The Dallas family have rented out their home in Scotland and are embarking on a year-long trip in August 2023. So far, they have visited India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Malaysia.

They are currently in the jungles of Khao Sok in Thailand, with Bangkok the next stop on their itinerary, followed by Cambodia.

Dallas said her son has picked up a few phrases in a foreign language and has developed a taste for exotic fish curries and chicken leg dishes.

“We hope we can inspire others to go out and see the real world,” said the father of one.
