Met Gala Honors Karl Lagerfeld

Vogue revealed on Friday that the theme for their annual gala this year will pay tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld. The beloved designer died four years ago at the age of 85 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The exhibition is officially called. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” it will present designs he has produced or been associated with over his long career spanning from 1954 to 2019. The designer compiled designs across brands such as Balmain, Chloé, Fendi and Chanel, in addition to its own line.
Lagerfeld is a regular at the gala and good friends with gala emcee Anna Wintour. In 2015, she helped organize the Met Gala, the theme of the year was Chanel-inspired.
This Met Gala Has a Special Touch

Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, told Vogue that “Karl never gets tired of telling me that fashion doesn’t belong in a museum,” so it’s a little odd that he would be the subject of their acknowledgment.
Bolton went on to share that they have added a special touch just for Lagerfeld’s preference. 150 of the selected looks will be displayed next to their original sketches by Lagerfeld himself. They want a rotten focus on the designer’s love for sketching as a whole, fashion aside.
Bolton recalled a conversation he had with the designer at one of the many galas they attended together.
“When we worked on the Chanel show together, he was very generous in what he lent, but he was not at all interested in the show itself! He would say, ‘Fashion is not art — fashion belongs to the street, to women’s bodies, to bodies men.’
This Meeting Is Far From Traditional

Bolton shared that Lagerfeld often throws out tradition or expands on it somehow for this show’s commercials to do the same.
“One thing I know for sure is that we can’t do traditional retrospectives. For one thing, I think Karl would hate it. Although one of the aspects is that he’s a historian, and he’ll revisit themes in his work, he’s always looking to the future in his own work—he hated looking back at the past. It was something he had a very conflicted relationship with.”
And while we like to think that galas are all about the red carpet moments, there’s still an entire after party that celebrities and fashionistas have to go through.
Bolton shared some of the speakers who will help honor Lagerfeld at the 2023 Met Gala. “The speakers include some of the premier speakers he has worked with over the years. He had a prime minister in Karl Lagerfeld who had also been with him at Chloe, and prime ministers at Chanel and Fendi—and these were the people closest to him to translate his designs into clothes. And they speak of him with great affection.”
