Nearly two dozen dirty, starving dogs have been rescued from a Houston home emitting an “unbearable” stench after officials discovered their owner had died “a few days” earlier.
A Sept. 27 welfare check on the 52-year-old man led to the discovery of 22 canines by Harris County Sheriff’s deputies.

Officers forced their way into the home after noticing signs of decay and a foul odor coming from the home, a sheriff’s spokesman told the Houston Chronicle.
The unidentified man had been dead for “several days” and had “multiple medical issues and was a social recluse, as described by family members,” spokesman Thomas Gilliland told the newspaper.
The 22 dogs, made up of different breeds, were immediately taken to the Houston Humane Society for medical treatment and shelter.

“The stench inside the home was described as unbearable by law enforcement,” the Houston Humane Society said in an Instagram post. “The house is in disrepair.”
Some of the puppies were malnourished, Gilliland said. It took time to remove it “because of the ammonia and the dog feces because the dogs were not released,” he added.
“It’s a terrible situation.”
Pictures released by the Humane Society show the filthy state of the house.
“Medical personnel report that flea infestations plague puppies, bear old wounds, develop overgrown nails, and develop bacterial skin infections,” the organization said.
“This poor dog’s life has been turned upside down and faces a challenging road to recovery.”
