270 Delta passengers spend night on remote Canadian military base after plane makes emergency landing

More than 200 Delta passengers were forced to spend the night at a cold and isolated Canadian military base after their Detroit-bound plane made an emergency landing due to mechanical problems.

Delta Flight 135 from Amsterdam to Detroit was diverted to Goose Bay, Newfoundland Sunday afternoon “out of an abundance of caution,” an airline spokeswoman told reporters.

The plane had a problem with the de-icing mechanism for one of its engines and had to make an emergency landing somewhere with an airstrip long enough to accommodate a large, passenger plane. told CBS Evening News.

270 passengers ended up waiting for over 20 hours to get back in the air and on their way to Michigan in a nightmare scenario.

After landing at Goose Bay Airport, travelers waited on the tarmac for between five and seven hours for another plane to arrive to transport them to Detroit, passenger Nathan Johnson said.

But when the second plane finally arrived and everyone boarded, they were told that the flight crew was overtime and they all had to leave the newly arrived plane, Johnson, 45, said.

Another passenger who was traveling with her husband and their 4-year-old son detailed the disastrous journey on her Instagram.

“Boarding a new plane after waiting 7+ hours, waiting an hour after boarding to take off only to hear that the crew and pilot have finished their flight time and need to rest now for 10-12 hours. Now Delta is looking for accommodations for all of us,” wrote Shikha Joshi in an Instagram story, according to NBC News.

The weary travelers – some of them without coats because of the Canadian cold – were eventually transported in groups of 25 to 30 by school bus to a nearby army barracks on Monday morning.

The 270 Delta passengers were stranded overnight at a Canadian military base after the plane made an emergency landing.

“We were escorted back to the room without understanding what would happen next as far as when we should wake up or when we should be ready,” he said. “No communication.”

There, they are given a room with a bed and basic amenities to get some shut-eye, as well as snacks and water. Many passengers, however, do not have any spare clothes or essentials that they put in their checked baggage.

Johnson and his wife had to sleep in the clothes they had been wearing since starting the journey home from Munich, Germany.

After several hours at the barracks, a bus arrived to take the passengers to the third plane. Their flight finally left the Canadian base at 5 p.m., with snow falling outside, Johnson said.

“Crew duty hours were affected by weather and runway conditions at Goose Bay airport causing the airport to suspend operations,” Delta said in a statement. “Delta is sending additional aircraft to Goose Bay to take customers to their final destinations on Monday.”

The airline said affected customers would be compensated for the long delay.
