35,000 migrants have been bused from Texas to sanctuary cities — including over 13K to NYC: Abbott

Texas has taken more than 35,000 immigrants to so-called sanctuary cities — including more than 13,000 to New York City — in response to the Biden administration’s failure to secure the southern border, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott revealed Tuesday.

Abbott launched the immigrant bus program in April 2022 in an effort to force blue states to share the burden Texas faces from the record number of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers crossing the border from Mexico into the US since President Biden took office.

“Texas has taken over 35,000 immigrants to self-proclaimed sanctuary cities,” Abbott tweeted Tuesday, including a breakdown of which cities are receiving the most immigrants.

“Over 11,300 to DC, Over 13,300 to NYC, Over 6,700 to Chicago, Over 2,600 to Philadelphia, Over 1,000 to Denver, Over 480 to LA,” the governor said.

The number released by Abbott Tuesday represents an increase of more than 12,000 since the state last updated the number of immigrants it has sent out of the state under Operation Lone Star — the state’s border security and burden-sharing effort launched by the governor in 2021.

In June, Abbott reported that the more than 500 buses Texas sent to sanctuary cities had diverted 22,650 immigrants from the Lone Star State.

“Our bus mission provides critical relief to an overburdened Texas border town,” Abbott argued in his Tuesday tweet, which came a day after the 12th busload of migrants since June arrived in Los Angeles from Texas.

The influx of immigrants in blue states, many of them far from the southern border, has fueled tensions between Democratic governments and local officials and the Biden administration.

In Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser called on Biden, a fellow Democrat, to mobilize the National Guard in August of last year to provide aid and protection for immigrants arriving from Texas – a request rejected by the Biden administration.

New York City’s growing migrant population, which is expected to double by June 2024, has overwhelmed the city’s resources, including schools and shelters, and Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has called on the 80-year-old president to act on the crisis more of three dozen. times.

Last month, Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul demanded that Biden address the issue in his first public appeal to the White House since the crisis began in the spring of 2022.
