LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Penn. – Five New York women, believed to be from the same family, were killed Tuesday when they were struck by a tractor-trailer after exiting their vehicle on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania State Police said the crash happened around 5:15 p.m. in Scott Township, north of Scranton, near mile marker 199.3.
According to state police, a 2022 Honda Odyssey, occupied by a female driver and three female passengers, lost control and crashed into the median, causing the vehicle to become disabled in the left lane.
The Audi A6, carrying two Odyssey occupants, immediately stopped on the right shoulder. State police said the two occupants of the Audi crossed both lanes of travel to speak to those in the Odyssey, which was standing in the left lane.
That’s when state police say a northbound tractor trailer struck the Odyssey on the driver’s side.
Investigation shows four pedestrians were hit, killing three of them.
In addition, two people who were still in the Odyssey at the time of impact were also killed.
