Five US military service members were killed after their plane crashed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during a training mission Friday afternoon, officials said Sunday.
The ship crashed during a “routine aerial refueling mission,” killing everyone on board, according to US European Command.
“Search and rescue efforts began immediately, including nearby US military aircraft and ships,” the official said, adding that there were no signs of any hostile activity involved.

It was not immediately clear which branch of the military the plane belonged to and the victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.
The Air Force has sent additional squadrons to the area, where the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford was also deployed last month to “deter any actor seeking to escalate the situation or expand” Israel’s war in Gaza.
