6 dead, nearly 2 dozen injured after severe storms tear through central Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Severe storms that ripped through central Tennessee killed six people Saturday and sent about two dozen to the hospital as homes and businesses were damaged in several towns.

Three people, including a child, were killed after an apparent tornado touched down in Montgomery County north of Nashville near the Kentucky state line, county officials said in a news release. And the Nashville Emergency Operations Center said in a post on its social media account that three people were killed as a result of the severe storm there. Montgomery County officials said 23 others there were treated for injuries at the hospital.

Photos posted by the Clarksville fire department on social media showed damaged homes with debris strewn across the grass, a tractor-trailer overturned on its side on the highway and insulation ripped from the building’s walls.

“This is heartbreaking news and our hearts are broken for the families of those who lost loved ones,” Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said in a statement. “The city stands ready to help them in their time of grief.”
