Six Hamas hostages – including an elderly grandfather and a female kindergarten teacher – have died in captivity, Israel said on Friday.

Kibbutz Nir Oz wrote on its Facebook page that the dead, who all lived in its community, included: grandfather Aryeh Zalmanovich, 85; kindergarten teacher and mother of four Maya Goren, 56, and photographer Ronen Engel, 54.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the death and Eliyahu Margalit, whose daughter was just released from Hamas custody Thursday, according to the Times of Israel.

Also among the hostages who did not survive in Hamas’s grip was Ofra Keidar, 70, who was caring for her disabled adult daughter. He was abducted from Kibbutz Be’eri on Oct. 7. during an early morning walk, the kibbutz announced. Israel did not say how or when the six died but said they died while being held in Gaza.

“This happened after the Ministry of Health’s expert team, the [Abu Kabir Forensic Institute]the chief rabbi and the Ministry of Religious Affairs declared their deaths based on the findings gathered and intelligence,” said IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari Hagari.

Zalmanovich is the founder of the kibbutz and a father of two, according to the post of honor.

“Aryeh was a land dweller all his life who was involved in agriculture and farm crops. A man of books and has a vast knowledge of history and knowledge of the country,” the post read.

Goren was a “hardworking and dedicated kindergarten teacher and nanny” who “took loving care of the kibbutz children for many years,” said another post about the mother of four.

Her husband, Avner Goren, was killed on October 7, the day the war began, according to Kibbutz Nir Oz. During a surprise attack by Palestinian terrorist groups on Israel, kibbutzes like Nir Oz were raided and many of their residents were killed or taken hostage.

Engel is a photographer, a volunteer for Magen David Adom, and a motorcycle enthusiast.

His wife and two daughters were released from captivity earlier this week, the kibbutz said.

Margalit was taken on October 7 when he went to feed his horse in Nir Oz.

His daughter, Nili Margalit, 41, was released from custody Thursday, according to the Times of Israel.

Hamas released more than 100 hostages during the seven-day ceasefire in exchange for prisoners being released from Israeli facilities.

The ceasefire ended Friday morning, and fighting almost immediately resumed.
