70-year-old killer of pregnant wife emerges from rainforest 22 years after escaping jail because statute of limitations ran out

A 70-year-old man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife has emerged from the Argentine rainforest where he has lived since he escaped from prison more than 20 years ago.

Ramón Ángel Abregú, 70, re-entered Tierra del Fuego – an archipelago near the southern tip of the country – this week after crossing four border points, two in Argentina and two in Chile, without papers, according to local channel Clarín.

Abregú lived undetected in the Chaco Salteño jungle following his escape in February 2001, resurfacing after his criminal statute of limitations expired.

He arrived at the Court of Criminal Trials in Río Grande to request the prescription of the case, which indicated the statute of limitations.

“The statute of limitations is 20 years, which is the time during which he managed to remain a fugitive living in hiding,” his lawyer Alejandro De la Riva told local media.

“He served his sentence that way.”

Abregú was sentenced to 20 years in prison in September 2000 for shooting his seven-months-pregnant wife Eva Falcón four times at a Rio Grande medical clinic in January of that year.

He was convicted of femicide, premeditated murder with gender-related motivation.

A few months after his sentence, Abregú fled to Chile in a truck bound for the Sebastián Border Crossing.

He would later re-enter the country and live in the Northern Territory in the jungle, according to Clarín.

He managed to escape from prison by taking advantage of the lack of security, the local outlet said.

There were three officers guarding 23 prisoners at that time.

By the time Abregú’s absence was noticed during a shift change, he was gone for half the day.

It is unclear whether Abregú will walk free to live out the rest of his life in the community.

He is currently being held at the Río Grande Detention Unit while his defense appeals for his release.

A source close to the prosecutor’s office said his release was “not so automatic” because of the legal issues surrounding his case.
