700 staffers sickened after Airbus Christmas dinner in France

‘Tis the season to be merry, not sick.

But that’s what happened to many of the 2,600 workers at French aerospace group Airbus Atlantic, who fell fatally ill after a gourmet Christmas dinner hosted by the company.

The company’s own restaurant rolled out the red carpet with gourmet dishes featuring foie gras, scallops, lobster and beef tenderloin, topped off with decadent desserts like ice cream logs and hazelnut chocolate mousse – all for just about $16 per person, the Guardian reports.

But within 24 to 48 hours of the festive celebration on December 14, the affected workers showed “clinical signs of vomiting and/or diarrhea.”

About 700 workers reportedly fell ill.

One worker, known only as Nolwenn, told the Ouest-France newspaper: “I have colic and headaches that I have never had before. It is worse than giving birth.”

Health officials have launched an investigation to determine what caused the massive outbreak of gastroenteritis, although an Airbus spokesman claimed no one had been “seriously ill.”

A questionnaire was sent to everyone who attended the dinner.

Airbus Atlantic, a subsidiary of the world’s largest aircraft maker, Airbus, employs 15,000 people in five countries.
