A 92-year-old man survived that night in sub-freezing temperatures last week after abandoning his car and sliding down an Oregon highway embankment.
Larry Hendrickson defied death by covering himself in the vegetation he was searching for, Oregon State Police said.
Henrickson was reported as an “overdue” driver around 3 p.m. Nov. 7 and was last known to be driving westbound on I-84 in La Grande, a town in the northwest corner of Oregon.
The next morning, officers saw his car abandoned in the road off the highway.
“Not far from there, military personnel found the elderly male driver under the embankment,” said the police.

Hendrickson was still hiding under the vegetation he was trying to survive a night of what police called “life-threatening cold weather conditions” when he was found by troopers.
Temperatures dropped to 11 degrees that night, weather data show, and were still well below freezing when he was finally found.
Miraculously, he was conscious and breathing, OSP said.
Hendrickson was rushed to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
“We are grateful for this positive result. Exposure to cold weather can be life-threatening and one more night in these conditions could be fatal,” Oregon State Police Captain Kyle Kennedy said in a statement.
