Abhijeet is an Indian playback singer and music composer. He has sung songs in more than 18 languages including Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, Marathi, and Gujarati. Abhijeet has a record of singing more than 6000 songs in almost 1000 films.

Abhijeet was born as ‘Abhijeet Bhattacharya’ on 30 October 1958 (age 60 years; as on 2018) in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. He did his schooling from Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Kanpur, and BNSD Inter College, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He did his B.Com from Christ Church College, Kanpur. After he passed class 10, Abhijeet started his training in singing from his teachers RS Katiyar and Shankar Bordes. In 1981, she went to Mumbai to pursue her higher studies in Chartered Accountancy but decided to make her career as a professional singer.

Abhijeet was born into a middle-class Bengali family to Kanpur-based businessman-turned-editor, Dhirendranath Bhattacharya, and Kamladevi Bhattacharya.
He has three brothers, Abhijeet is the youngest. He is married to Sumati Bhattacharya, a fashion designer and the couple has two sons named Dhruv Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Jai Abhijeet Bhattacharya.
Career
Abhijeet’s debut as a singer was with the Bengali film “Aparupa” in 1982.
He made his Bollywood debut as a singer with the song “Prem Doot Aaya” in the film “Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye” in 1883.

Controversy
- He was known as the voice of Shah Rukh Khan in the 1990s and 2000s. After singing in the film “Billu Barber (2009),” she refused to sing for Shah Rukh again. The reason he gave was that he had sung songs in Shah Rukh’s films “Main Hoon Na (2004)” and “Om Shanti Om (2007),” where everyone was associated except the singer.
- In 2015, an FIR was filed against Abhijeet for molesting and abusing a woman. The incident took place at Lokhandwala Durga Puja Pandal where the victim was watching Kailash Kher’s live performance. He left his seat because it was too crowded. It was then that he felt inappropriately touched by the singer. He was even threatened by the singer not to take any action. He finally filed a case against Abhijeet under Section 354 A (Obscenity) 506 & 34 IPC.
- He made a controversial statement in support of Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case. Salman was sentenced to five years in prison. Abhijeet supported Salman tweeted, “Kutta rd pe soyega kutte ki maut marega, roads garib ke baap ki nahi hai I ws homles an year nvr slept on rd.” He faced a huge backlash for his scathing comments afterwards.
- In 2015, famous Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali was banned from performing in India. Singers who supported the ban said that country and patriotism came before music. He also tagged Ghulam Ali as the “Dengue Artist.”
- When Uri’s attack happened, he lashed out at Khan-Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan calling them “Shameless” for breeding Pakistani actors. He also lashed out at filmmakers Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt for ‘breeding and feeding’ Pakistani actors.
- He sparked controversy in 2016 when he wrote an offensive comment to Karan Johar for portraying Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in his film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).” He also demanded to remove Fawad’s role from the film completely.
- He once caused outrage by tweeting offensive tweets of JNU student and activist Shehla Rashid. His tweet said, “Rumor has it he took money for two hours and didn’t satisfy the customer… big racket.”
- Another FIR was filed against Abhijeet for harassing a woman. According to the woman, she had an argument with the singer because of some drilling work going on in their community. However, the singer claimed that the woman threatened him to get money from him. Police have reportedly registered an FIR under sections 509 (Words, gestures or acts intended to insult the honor of a woman) and 506 (Criminal Threats) of the Indian Penal Code, against Abhijeet.
- During the killing of Infosys technician Swathi in Chennai, Abhijeet said that it was a case of ‘Love-Jihad.’ The controversy arose after the editor-in-chief of “Janta Ka Reporter”, Rifat Jawaid objected to Abhijeet. Another journalist Swati Chaturvedi criticized Abhijeet for giving racial color to Swathi’s murder. For that, Abhijeet responded to Swati by calling her ‘Besharm Budhiya.’ Swati later filed a police complaint against the singer for calling her abusive language. After that, Abhijeet said that he wouldn’t mind if Abhijeet would say the same thing in English. He added that all those who attacked him were anti-state.
- In 2018, during the ongoing #MeToo movement, Abhijeet was accused of sexually harassing a flight attendant at the pub. The singer denied the allegations saying fat and ugly girls accused men of harassment. He even laughed at her saying that he is famous and if people use his name to gain popularity, he doesn’t mind.

- After years of struggle, Abhijeet decided to return to his hometown, Kanpur. But before that, he thought of showing his work to RD Burman one last time. He goes to Burman and asks him to spend time and listen to his tapes. RD Burman listens to her tapes and advises her not to return. Then, it was RD Burman, who gave Abhijeet his first break.
- When he was young, he used to imitate Kishore Kumar’s singing style. Kishore Kumar was his idol.
