Academy Head Promises Swift Action Going Forward In Light Of Oscars Slap

Last year’s fight at the Oscars still leaves a sour taste in everyone’s mouth, and the head of the Academy, Janet Yang, is addressing the situation once again.

Although the Oscars 2022 honored some big names in Hollywood, it’s a shame that no one remembers those beautiful moments. The famous night featured famous actor Will Smith taking the stage and punching comedian Chris Rock in the face as the comedian presented the best documentary feature category.

The famous slap came after Rock shared a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. Unhappy with the remarks made against his wife, the “Bad Boys” actor got up and did something about it, then returned to his seat and repeatedly yelled at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of the king’s mouth!”

Smith, who remains in attendance, won a best actor Oscar for his performance in “King Richard.” Immediately after the ceremony was broadcast, the “ALADDIN” actor resigned from the Academy on April 1, 2022, and released a statement that read:

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I denied other nominees and winners their chance to celebrate and be celebrated for their incredible work. I am heartbroken.”

The “ALI” actor apologized again for his actions in July 2022 via a video post revealing that Rock has yet to receive his apology. He said, “I called Chris, and the message that came back was that he wasn’t ready to talk, and when he was, he would call him.”

The “Men In Black” actor has headlined Apple’s slavery drama “Emancipation” and confirmed that a fourth “Bad Boys” movie is in the works. About two weeks after the attack, the Academy board took a stand against Smith’s actions by revoking his AMPAS membership and banning him from attending the Oscars for ten years.

However, while many thought it was an appropriate and adequate response by the organization, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Janet Yang, was not satisfied with their actions in dealing with the fallout.

Daily Mail reported on how Yang aired her regrets at the 2023 Oscar Nominees Luncheon, which was attended by the likes of Tom Cruise, Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett, and Steven Spielberg.

“I’m sure you all remember we had an unprecedented event at the Oscars,” he told the crowd before adding, “What happened on stage was completely unacceptable, and the response from our organization was inadequate.”

The 66-year-old went on to say that the organization took bad action during the Oscars broadcast or right after but quickly assured viewers that nothing less was expected of them moving forward. He said:

“We learned from this that the academy must be transparent and fully accountable in our actions, and especially in times of crisis, you must act quickly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect nothing less from us in the future.”

Concluding the salacious speech, he told the candidates that all categories for this year’s show would be broadcast live on ABC, which drew a standing ovation.

Chris Rock Is Not Over Last Year’s Events With Will Smith

A few months before the Lunch event, the stand-up comedian revealed that he wasn’t excited to return to the Oscars. Last August, The Blast reported how the “Death at a Funeral” actor turned down an offer from the Academy to host the 2023 Oscars.

During one of Rock’s Phoenix stand-up performances, he shared with the crowd that he had been asked to host this year’s Oscar ceremony but turned down enough opportunities.

The “Down to Earth” actor joked about the olive branch, comparing a possible return to the Oscar stage to returning to a crime scene. He also referenced the infamous OJ Simpson murder trial, saying accepting the offer was like asking Nicole Simpson to “go back to the restaurant.”

Furthermore, the “Everybody Hates Chris” narrator also revealed that he was offered the opportunity to appear in a new commercial for the Super Bowl, which he also turned down. However, he didn’t give any reason for turning down the Super Bowl offer.
