Shonka Dukureh, Actress and musician, who played Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton in Baz Luhrmann’s film Elviswas found dead in her Nashville apartment on July 21, 2022. The Nashville police department tweeted that there was no foul play and that she was found in the bedroom of the Kothe Way apartment she shared with her two young children.
The actress, who performed with Doja Cat at Coachella this year, graduated from Trevecca Nazarene with a degree in education and holds a theater degree from Fisk University, according to WPLN-FM. Shonka said she briefly taught second grade before working with inner-city youth through after-school and summer programs in an interview with the station last month.
Shonka is a graduate of Fisk University.
“My condolences to Shonka Dukureh’s family. Shonka graduated from Fisk and called Nashville home for many years,” Nashville Mayor John Cooper said in a statement via Fox17. “His powerful voice and artistry will live on through his music, and we honor his memory on this sad day.”
