On July 8, the dinosaur thriller “65” is available to stream on Netflix. The official synopsis reads:

“After a major crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth — 65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance to save, Mills and the only survivor, Koa, must cross an unknown terrain full of dangerous prehistoric creatures.”

Created by “A Quiet Place” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, Driver stars as Commander Mills, who crashes on prehistoric Earth with fellow survivor, Koa, played by Ariana Greenblatt.

What Do Critics Say?

Unfortunately, according to critics, this is not “Jurassic Park.” On Rotten Tomatoes, “65” only has a 35% score with critics. It fared better with audiences, scoring 65%. Film Nation’s Roger Moore gave the film a 1.5 out of 4, writing, “ ‘After Earth’ has little that could be used for humor and is not overbearing. The limited fun and lackluster guidebook approach make this drama like an episode of ‘Twilight Zone’ heavily loaded with desirable filler.”

Rex Reed of the Observer gave it a 1 out of 4, writing, “65 is horrible stuff to watch, even for dinosaur lovers—and not much fun, either.” The AV Club’s Manual Betancourt writes, “The reveal that accompanies the title card for Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ 65 all but demands a hearty guffaw, except this is a movie that knows little about humor.”

However, there are some fans who enjoy the movie. Jack Bottomley of Starburst wrote, “Adam Driver and his young actress Ariana Greenblatt are fantastic, in a tight, to the point, survivalist story, with a fat-trimmed script, excellent special effects and performances that rattle across some of the more human moments calm.”

John Nugent of Empire Magazine called it “A short, sharp, largely original major studio film, untethered to any franchise or intellectual property – at a time when such concepts were in danger of extinction. Also, it had a T-Rex in it. Sometimes- sometimes, it’s enough. Nugent gave the film 3 out of 5 stars. James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave one of the more honest reviews, writing, “By keeping its aims limited, it delivers what it promises, and that’s saying something. I admit I was more than entertained. with this high-concept sci-fi adventure from half the movies I’ve seen so far in 2023.”

“A fun popcorn movie with a predictable ending. I really enjoyed the performance of Pemandu. Not interested in his interests, though. Great effect with the dinos,” wrote Brent N. “I’ll definitely see it again as a home stream or rental.”

A user named Kyle M. wrote, “It’s okay. It was made by the same creators of A Quite Place, but they sure didn’t capture what made the movie good. The Charter is pretty good and I like Adam Driver, but the plot feels slow and a bit boring.”
