The CEO of an Indian AI startup has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 4-year-old son after the child’s body was found in his luggage, reports say.
Suchana Seth, who heads The Mindful AI Lab, was arrested in the southern state of Karnataka on Monday after authorities contacted the taxi driver who was transporting her and asked him to take her to the nearest police station, Reuters reported, citing Goa police official Paresh Naik.
Naik said Seth checked into a hotel in Goa state on Saturday, but the boy was missing when he checked out of the property Monday night, according to Reuters.
Naik told the news agency that hotel cleaning staff found blood stains in Seth’s room and informed the police.
“When the trunk was opened, the child’s body was found,” North Goa Police Superintendent Nidhin Valsa was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged murder are unclear, but Indian news website The Week said Seth had reportedly told police that she and her husband had separated, and that divorce proceedings were underway.
Seth has now been brought back to the state of Goa for a reported interrogation while her husband, who was in Indonesia at the time of the murder, has been asked to return to India, according to Reuters.

Seth’s LinkedIn page describes him as an “AI ethicist and data scientist with over 12 years of experience in leading data science teams, and scaling machine learning solutions at startups and industrial research labs” and that he is a “Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University. “
On the Harvard website, it says “At Berkman, Suchana [was] examine ways to operationalize ethical machine learning and AI in industry. His interests include auditing algorithms for fairness, accountability and transparency in machine learning, ethically monetizing AI, security vulnerabilities specific to machine learning and AI systems, and the regulatory landscape for predictive algorithms.”
