Air Canada passenger in ‘state of crisis’ tries to open door during flight

An Air Canada passenger “in crisis” had to be restrained after he tried to open the door on a flight from London to Toronto.

The elderly man was on Flight AC855 Sunday when he tried to open the door, which was impossible at cruising altitude, the Toronto Star reported, citing Peel Regional Police.

Cabin crew restrained passengers “as part of their flight safety protocol,” police told the outlet. He was found by police at Toronto Pearson International Airport around 3 p.m

He was said to be “in a state of crisis and confusion,” police said, adding that “it does not appear that his actions were intentional.”

The unidentified man has not been criminally charged and “he and his family have been contacted by additional sources,” police told the Star.

“Our crew is experienced and managed the situation accordingly, allowing the flight to continue as normal to its destination. According to procedure, the authorities found the plane,” an airline representative told the outlet.

Air Canada states that it is not possible to open aircraft doors at high altitudes because they are “designed to act as plugs that take advantage of the internal and external air pressure differences to create a secure seal.”

On January 10, a passenger on another Air Canada flight opened the plane’s door and fell onto the runway while boarding in Toronto for a flight to Dubai.

The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital after the incident, which resulted in a six-hour delay.
