The Air Force is helping host an esports tournament designed to help service members better prepare for complex combat situations.
The Air Force partnered with MITRE, a nonprofit national security company, to launch the tournament MITER believes will help the service “better understand mission logistics options and priorities under attack,” according to a report from Military.com.
MITER has opened registration to play the game “Drone Guardian,” which requires teams of participants to defend a deployed airfield from enemy attack while maintaining the ability to launch aircraft missions.
The game will mix elements of first-person shooter, strategy and puzzle games, according to the non-profit organization, with players having to deal with various types of attacks from land, air, sea, space and even cyber attacks – sometimes simultaneously.
Players have to work together to prioritize which areas to defend while maintaining the airfield to wage the battle.
“Teams must make critical mission decisions such as whether to prioritize preparing aircraft for launch over defending an air base or strategizing contested logistics to ensure they have the supplies they need to complete the mission,” reads the game’s description on MITER’s website.

The game is designed to help the Air Force collect data that can help keep real-life air bases safe and supplied and save the lives of those tasked with defending them.
“Even without adversary intervention, military logistics networks can be fragile and chaotic while also having a single point of failure, creating ripe opportunities for attack,” Eliahu Niewood, vice president of Air Force and Space for MITRE, said in a statement about the organization’s registration. not for profit page. “Furthermore, as the military plans and conducts the movement, supply and maintenance of its forces, they can easily be attacked in the next global conflict. GameX uses both military and civilian participants to test which logistical decisions are best to enable the mission.”
The Army has a history of using video games in training, including a 1993 Super Nintendo game designed specifically to help the Army train soldiers for marksmanship, according to a Military.com report.
The Army then partnered with Raytheon to create a virtual reality combat simulator capable of tracking the movements of a soldier’s entire body.
The MITER esports tournament will be held in three separate locations: Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina; MITER headquarters in McLean, Virginia; and MITER’s regional office in San Antonio, Texas. The Shaw Air Force Base tournament will be held Sept. 22-23, the Virginia event will be Oct. 13-14 and the Texas event will be Oct. 20-21.
