At least two people aboard a county sheriff’s rescue helicopter were injured when it crashed into a Florida apartment building Monday morning, authorities said.
A Broward County Sheriff’s Office helicopter crashed into the building just after 8:45 a.m. in the area of North Dixie Highway and Atlantic Boulevard south of the Pompano Beach Airpark, where it originated.
Video posted online showed the helicopter slowly descending as black smoke billowed from its tail.
Moments later it spiraled down and crashed into an apartment building near Blanche Ely High School.
Almost immediately afterward, the building and plane were fully engulfed in flames, authorities told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Brian Piggotti, who was out for a walk at the time, said he saw the helicopter crash.
He told the outlet he saw the plane take off from the west side of the air park, fly south and then dive into the building.
