Alaskan bear cubs found more than 3,600 miles away from home on a Florida road

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. – Two Kodiak bear cubs from southern Alaska were found wandering a rural Florida road, and the incident was caught on the body camera of an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s office deputy.

A local resident alerted authorities to the sighting on December 5 and said it was a sight he had never seen before.

Their size and color are two clues that they are not dealing with a species native to Florida, but there are still many questions about where they both came from.

The couple appeared to be fine and attempted to get into a responding patrol car.

An investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed residents’ initial theory – the bear was not from Florida; they are actually Kodiak children from southern Alaska.

The bears were taken to a secure facility, and information about the event was kept confidential to protect the sanctity of the investigation.

As of the last day of January, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office revealed the circumstances that caused the bear to travel more than 3,600 miles.

According to investigators, it was determined that the bear escaped from a nearby enclosure and they were housed by a local resident.

The FWC said that residents are now facing a list of violations but did not reveal the identity of the suspects.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game told the sheriff’s office that there are only about 3,500 Kodiak bears in existence and are a subspecies of the better-known brown and grizzly bears.

It’s still unclear how someone could bring the bears to Florida or when they will be transported back to The Last Frontier.
