Alex Murdaugh agrees to plead guilty to financial crimes, pay back $9 million to clients

Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has reached a plea deal with prosecutors in his federal financial crimes case — and as part of the deal must pay millions of dollars to former clients, according to newly filed legal papers.

The disgraced lawyer — who is already serving a life sentence for shooting to death his wife and one of his sons — pleaded guilty to 22 charges as part of a deal that must still be approved by a judge, according to documents filed in court Monday.

Murdaugh, 65, is accused of stealing millions from clients. He faces money laundering, wire fraud, bank fraud and other charges.

The plea agreement requires Murdaugh to repay $9 million and cooperate fully with investigators by providing “full, complete and truthful information about all criminal activity,” the document states.

He could be mandated to take a polygraph test as part of his cooperation.

Prosecutors agreed to recommend that any prison time he faces in the case be served concurrently with any state sentence on the same charge.

Murdaugh also faces state charges tied to an alleged $8.8 million fraud. He appeared in court last week looking dapper in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs.

His legal team is trying to push back the trial date until next fall and change the venue because they don’t think Murdaugh can get a fair trial on 101 charges related to financial crimes.

Murdaugh’s attorneys earlier this month also called for a new trial in his double-murder case based on evidence they claim shows court clerks tampered with jurors by telling them not to believe their client’s testimony.

Murdaugh was convicted earlier this year of shooting to death his 52-year-old wife Maggie and 22-year-old son Paul.

Prosecutors said he killed them because his massive theft was about to be discovered and he thought their violent deaths would give him sympathy as he tried to cover up his white-collar crimes.
