Serial killer Alex Murdaugh will plead guilty to stealing nearly $8 million from his disabled client — marking the first time he will admit in court to a crime.
The disgraced South Carolina lawyer — who is serving two life sentences for killing his wife and son — is set to enter a “not guilty” plea during a Sept. 21 hearing for the federal case to avoid going to trial, according to court records filed Thursday.
It is unclear whether Murdaugh, 55, will be offered a deal to drop any of the dozens of charges he faces, including money laundering, wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. .
Each charge carries a minimum of a maximum of 20 years in prison. Some were sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison.
The indictment was a key milestone in the March case against Murdaugh for killing his wife Maggie and son Paul on a large 1,772-acre South Carolina hunting ranch in June 2021.
Murdaugh shot dead his family members in an attempt to cover up his theft, hoping their deaths would give him sympathy and time to think of a plan, prosecutors argued.
Before the murders, state and federal investigators said Murdaugh spent a decade making millions from clients who suffered debilitating injuries and who needed money for medical treatment.

He also faces about 100 other state charges of insurance fraud, tax evasion, and stealing from clients and his own family’s law firm.
