Alka attended the National School of Dramatic Repertory in Delhi and later, she moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Indian television.

In Television
Alka made her acting debut with the tv series, Gathaand, directed by Ramesh Sippy. Later, she has appeared in serials like Faasle, 9 Malabar Hill, Sansar, Kartavya, Kammal etc. She has also worked in famous tv series like Ye Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Tara Bai on Color’s Tv. She is mostly seen playing negative roles in TV series, however, in 2022 she was offered to play the positive role of Sushma in the tv series Mose Chhal Kiye Jaaye. Alka’s positive role was also praised by the audience. For this, he said so
I would like to mention that whatever films I have done, I have played positive characters. I think an actor is an actor. I might say that I look good in certain characters but I have the ability to portray and do justice to any character.
In Movies
In 2014, Alka made her Bollywood acting debut in the film Queen where she played the role of Kangana Ranaut’s mother.
He worked in films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Veere Di Wedding (2018), Soorma (2018), Badhai Ho (2018), and Indoo Ki Jawani (2018). Alka has also worked in Marathi films.

Controversy
In 2017, Alka and her mother were sent for two years to Sangrur district jail after a Sangrur (Punjab) court upheld the two-year jail sentence awarded to Alka and her mother in a check bounce case by a lower court. Alka and her mother had borrowed Rs.50 lakh from farmer Avtar Singh to make the serial but did not return the money. When Avtar Singh demanded his money, they gave him two checks of Rs 25 lakh each, which bounced and so he moved a local court in Malerkotla in 2015, which sentenced them to two years in jail.

- In an interview, the actress expressed her fondness for negative characters in Hindi TV serials. To this, he also added that
I somehow find the vamp characters very interesting. We are the people crazy ungliyon par heroin ko naachna padhta hai (laugh). And they are equally challenging too.
