Controversy
Charged with Encouraging Religious Enmity
In April 2022, the Rajasthan Police registered two separate FIRs against News18 anchor Aman Chopra for promoting religious enmity by peddling fake news. Reportedly, he compared the demolition of a 300-year-old temple in Alwar with the partial demolition of a mosque in Jahangirpuri while organizing a live performance.
During the performance, he said,
Jahangirpuri took revenge by attacking Mahadev. Please listen carefully to what I have to say.”
He added,
Could it be a coincidence that two days ago, a bulldozer was used on the premises of a mosque in Jahangirpuri and today three temples were demolished in Alwar Rajasthan. A temple is 300 years old. Is it to take revenge on Jahangirpuri?”
Chopra ignored the fact that the temple was destroyed on the orders of the BJP-run municipal corporation in Alwar. Soon after the show aired, #ArrestAmanChopra started trending on Twitter. later, two FIRs were registered in Bundi and Dungarpur districts under section 153 (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony), 295 ( Injuring or desecrating a place of worship with the intention of insulting the religion of any group), 295-A (Deliberate and malicious act, intended to arouse religious feelings), 120 B (Criminal conspiracy penalty), 124 A (Sedition) and 67 ( Imprisonment for non-payment of fines).
