A man died after falling into a 130-foot hole dug under his kitchen floor after dreaming of gold buried under his property in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
João Pimenta, 71, lost his balance Thursday afternoon and fell into a large hole he had dug, which ended up being the height of a 12-story building.
Neighbors told local media that following a “prophetic dream,” Pimenta had become obsessed with the idea that there was gold buried under his kitchen floor and had spent more than a year digging for the treasure.
A neighbor, Arnaldo da Silva, told Globo he had tried to advise the old man not to dig the dangerous deep hole, but the man insisted, convinced he would strike gold if he continued his search.
Da Silva even said that in recent days, his neighbors have been talking about looking for dynamite to blow up the boulders blocking the excavation.

According to the neighbor, Pimenta would also pay others to help dig holes, increasing their pay rates as the gap deepened. Recently he has paid others up to $500 to help in his efforts.

Local police responded to his home Thursday after he fell and the elderly man’s body was taken to a medical center for an autopsy.
He was found to have suffered a head injury and a broken leg and other broken bones and was pronounced dead.
