“After much consideration, I have made the very difficult decision to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia,” she said. “It is important for me to say that I never chose this. I stood up for my truth and in doing so my life because I knew it was destroyed.”

“The insults I face on social media are an amplified version of how women are re-victimized when they come forward,” she continued. “Now I finally have the opportunity to free myself from something that I tried to leave more than six years ago and on terms that I can agree to. I did not make any entry. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or banter regarding my voice moving forward.”

“I made this decision because I lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony serves as entertainment and social media,” he continued. “When I stood before a judge in the UK, I was vindicated by a robust, impartial and fair system, where I was protected from having to give the worst moments of my testimony in front of the world’s media, and where the court found that I have experienced domestic and sexual violence.”

“However, in the US, I exhausted almost all my resources before and during the trial where I was subjected to a courtroom where abundant, direct evidence corroborating my testimony was excluded and where popularity and power were more important than reason. and due process,” he continued. “Meanwhile, I was exposed to a kind of humiliation that I cannot live with again. Even if my US appeal was successful, the best outcome would be a retrial where a new jury would have to consider the evidence again. I can’t go through it a third time.”

“Time is precious and I want to spend my time productively and purposefully,” Heard wrote. “For too many years I have been locked in a difficult and expensive legal process, which has shown itself unable to protect me and my right to free speech. I cannot afford to risk an impossible bill – one that is not only financial, but also psychological, physical and emotional.”
“Women shouldn’t face abuse or bankruptcy for telling the truth, but unfortunately it’s not unusual,” she continued. “In solving this case I also chose the freedom to devote my time to work that helped me heal after the divorce; work that exists in a world where I feel seen, heard and believed, and where I know I can affect change.”

“I will not be threatened, discouraged or persuaded by what happened rather than telling the truth,” he added. “No one can and no one will take that away from me. My voice will forever remain the most valuable asset I have.”
