As of Wednesday, November 15, more than 140 organizations and individuals have signed an open letter in support of Amber Heard against “persistent online harassment.”

“Much of this harassment is fueled by misinformation, misogyny, biphobia and a monetized social media environment where a woman’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault are ridiculed for entertainment,” the letter said. “The same misinformation and victim-blaming tropes are now being used against others who claim abuse.”

“In our opinion, the Depp v. Hearing decision and the ongoing discourse surrounding it demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of intimate partner and sexual violence and how survivors respond to it,” the letter continued. “The damaging consequences of spreading this misinformation are incalculable. We have grave concerns about the increasing misuse of defamation suits to threaten and silence survivors.”

The letter concluded with “We support everyone’s ability to report intimate partner and sexual violence without harassment and intimidation.”
