An American Airlines plane skidded off the runway and into the grass shortly after landing in snowy conditions Thursday at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport in New York.
The Embraer E145 – carrying 53 passengers – had just landed and was being loaded into the terminal around 4pm when it crashed, FAA and American Airlines officials said.
The frightening incident was caused by “snowy airport conditions” brought by a light snowstorm across the area, an American spokesman said.
Videos shared on social media showed emergency service crews responding to the plane, with several firefighters escorting passengers to a snow-covered field.
Fortunately, none of the 50 passengers and three crew members were injured.
“Safety is our top priority, and we apologize to our customers for their experience. Everyone on the plane has departed safely and was transported to the terminal by bus,” the American spokesman said.

The plane had just made the 300-mile journey from Philadelphia International Airport, though it landed nearly an hour behind schedule, Flightaware data shows.
It was snowing lightly in Rochester at the time of the incident.
The area is expecting another round of heavy snow, with heavy blows of 2 to 4 inches per hour forecast for nearby Buffalo over the weekend.
The aircraft was pulled off the taxiway and taken out of service for a full inspection.
The FAA is investigating the incident.
