Showtime has just revealed that American Gigolo has been canceled after its first season, putting an interesting plot to closure. The Jon Bernthal-starrer became one of the first programs to face the merger ax after the sudden merger between Showtime and Paramount+, something the CW knows all too well.
The merger resulted in a change in perspective and tactics, culminating in the cancellation of two other series. Let the Right One In and Three Women meet the same fate as American Gigolo, though the latter two may find new homes on other networks. This reimagining of Paul Schrader’s classic story of prostitution may face an even bigger challenge than the canceled series, following the dismal ratings and critical backlash of the first season.
More information about American Gigolo
It would be incorrect to suggest that the American Gigolo was unattractive in its heyday. It can’t match the high standards set by the original film, written by one of the best of the New Hollywood era, but it lacks the confidence of its first season. We can’t guarantee that the series will improve, but as it stands, it won’t stand a chance.
It’s even more annoying because the series had such a difficult pre-production. It was given the go-light in 2016, but it didn’t come to fruition until years later, thanks to a new producer, David Hollander, who has worked on shows like Ray Donovan. This is far from the conclusion of the story. After Hollander was fired for misconduct, the new rider, David Bar Katz, also quit shortly after starting the season. After great consideration, it was awarded to Nikki Toscano and Russell Rothberg. The tragic narrative of American Gigolo has continued since the sitcom will most likely never be seen again.
The series summary states:
“Julian Kaye, a former gigolo freed after 15 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, struggles to pick up the pieces while the detective who put him behind bars tries to solve the mystery that led to his incarceration. Julian tries to reconcile his escort background with the man he is now by reuniting with his old lover Michelle, his troubled mother and another sex worker. He is searching for the truth about the frame that imprisoned him all those years ago, and he hopes to be reunited with his true love, Michelle.”
Gretchen Mol, Lizzie Brocheré, Gabriel LaBelle, Leland Orser, and Rosie O’Donnell appeared in the series. Showtime has released American Gigolo.
