Americans stuck in Gaza despite diplomatic deal to allow them to leave

Americans said they were stranded in Gaza despite a tentative deal with Egypt, the US and Israel allowing them to cross into Egypt Saturday, according to reports.

A diplomatic agreement between the three countries allowed more than 500 Americans trapped in the Gaza Strip to leave the war-torn area through the Rafah crossing until 10 a.m. ET but dozens of US citizens said they were still trapped.

As the deadline nears, it remains unclear whether Hamas will allow the movement of US citizens or other foreigners to the Egyptian border, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“This is absolutely terrifying,” said Lena Beseiso, 57, who was waiting at the Gaza border with her husband, two daughters and a 10-year-old grandson, in a text message seen by the New York Times. “I’m very worried now more than ever.”

It is unclear why the border is closed, with some reports saying Egypt will not allow US passport holders to cross unless Israel and the US allow aid trucks assembled in Rafah to enter the Gaza Strip, according to social media posts.
