A Michigan Amish family’s horse and buggy were stolen from outside Walmart while they were shopping over the weekend, police said.
The family – who has not been publicly named – was inside the store’s Sturgis location around 5:30 Saturday afternoon when the suspect fled in their vehicle, the Sturgis Department of Public Safety said.
“The victim had gone shopping at Walmart and came out to find their horse and cart stolen,” the official statement read.
“A truck driver, parked in the Walmart lot, had seen a woman steal a car…Police contacted the suspect earlier in the day at Walmart,” it continued.
It is not clear why the police had previously dealt with the suspect.
Authorities found the stolen horse and car later that afternoon, and arrested the 31-year-old suspect – who has not been publicly named – at a nearby motel, police said.

The suspect was detained at the St. Joseph County on charges of robbery and cattle rustling, pending trial, they added.
“The horse was not injured and their car was returned to the family,” the Stugis Department of Public Safety said.
The Amish are an ethno-religious group known for their traditional, old-fashioned clothing and for eschewing most contemporary technologies – including cars and the Internet.
