Anderson Cooper On Handling Grief After Losing Family

CNN reporter Anderson Cooper recently revealed how he handled grief when dealing with the loss of two important people to him. The 55-year-old man now has two children whom he raised with his parenting partner and best friend, Benjamin Maisani.

Cooper lost his famous father when he was just ten years old and suffered a similar loss more than a decade later when one of his three brothers committed suicide in his mother’s apartment.

The station’s news anchor shared that during that difficult period, he had to be alone and tried to cope by ignoring his feelings. Having two sons, two-year-old Wyatt and seven-month-old Sebastian, has reportedly changed her outlook on things and made her more open to talking about her grief.

I didn’t talk to people about it. I just became very introspective and introverted,” the reporter said.

I want to be the best parent I can be, and I realize that the way I deal with loss is effective for the time it happens, but things catch up with you . You have to face it at some point.”

The anchor suffered a similar loss in 1988 when Carter, one of his three brothers, died at age 23. The death was reported as a suicide and occurred when the 23-year-old jumped off the terrace of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt’s 14th-floor apartment in New York. His mother witnessed the incident.

Cooper again spoke about the death in 2014, revealing that Carter was smarter when he was alive, and that taking his life was “unthinkable” to him.

He’s Still Thinking About His Sister

The 55-year-old joined him Many people for an interview in 2021 and revealed that he is still affected by the loss of Carter. The father of two said, “Anytime you lose a loved one, especially when you’re young, it changes the trajectory of your life.”

The 55-year-old continued, “I can’t imagine that my brother died in 1988, and I’ve lived more of my life without him than I have with him. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about what he would have done , who he was, and I still think about his death and have questions about it.”

Cooper revealed that his mother, who witnessed the suicide, wasn’t doing any better and was reportedly “shocked” by the turn of events until she died in 2019. “There are some things that can’t be answered, and you have to find a way to live in space who don’t know, or don’t fully understand,” he said.
