Andrea Riseborough To Keep Oscar Nom, Campaign Tactics Will Be Addressed By Academy

January no doubt ended with the best news for Andrea Riseborough as she was able to retain an Oscar nomination for her performance in “To Leslie” despite chatter about her suitability.

As recent reports indicate, the Academy is reviewing award campaign procedures to verify and determine the fairness of Riseborough’s nomination.

All in all, things seem to be working out in his favor, barring some worrisome online campaign tactics, promised to be addressed by the Academy.

Andrea Riseborough Remains Oscar Nominee Following Review of Campaign Procedures

Following the January 27 announcement from The Academy about conducting a review of their rules for social media campaigns, it has been confirmed that Riseborough’s nomination will not be withdrawn.

The news was revealed on Tuesday, January 31, implying that the “Made in Dagenham” actress will remain one of the honorees in the Best Actress Oscar category.

According to PEOPLE, Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement, “Based on concerns raised last week about the “To Leslie” awards campaign, the Academy initiated a review of the film’s campaign tactics.

Kramer continued, “The Academy has determined the activities in question do not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be revoked.” However, he noted that although the movie star remains a candidate, several social media campaign approaches for “To Leslie” caught their attention.

“We found social media and outreach campaign tactics that raised concerns,” he said. “This tactic is being addressed directly with the parties responsible.”

Kramer believes the review makes it “clear” that part of the Academy’s rules must be spelled out to ensure “a better framework for respectful, inclusive and unbiased campaigns.” The concluded changes are set to be made after this year’s awards cycle and will be shared with members of The Academy as revealed in the CEO release.

Concluding his statement, Kramer stressed that The Academy “strives to create an environment where voting is based solely on the artistic and technical merit of films and worthy achievements.” In the Best Actress category, Riseborough was nominated alongside “Tár’s” Cate Blanchett, “Blonde’s” Ana de Armas, “The Fablemans'” Michelle Williams, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” Michelle Yeoh.

Meanwhile, it’s important to note that before the Oscars nomination announcement, the majority of Oscars pundits didn’t include him as the top dog for the nominations because he only earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination. However, it was reported that thanks to last-minute campaigning from Hollywood icons such as Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jane Fonda, Sarah Paulson and Edward Norton, the “Never Let Me Go” actor’s chances increased during the voting.

Additionally, there is no specific mention of Riseborough in the Academy’s release regarding the review of campaign procedures; however, it described its aim to ensure a “fair and ethical” awards competition. The statement also included, “We are reviewing campaign procedures around this year’s candidates to ensure no guidelines are violated. And to inform us whether guideline changes may be necessary.”

Given the Academy’s decision to take review action, some stars aren’t thrilled. One of them was “Yellowjackets” actress Christina Ricci, who ranted in a since-deleted Instagram post.

The 42-year-old began, “It seems funny that a ‘surprise nomination’ (meaning a lot of money wasn’t spent on placing this actor) for a legitimate outstanding performance is being investigated.” He then questioned whether only “films and actors” were capable of staging a campaign worthy of the recognition he believed to be “elitist and exclusive, and frankly, very backward.”

Ricci insisted that Riseborough likely had nothing to do with the campaign, but that his candidacy would still be tainted by the Academy’s actions. He added, “And if it is taken, shame on them.”

PEOPLE reports another A-lister is backing Riseborough amid Oscars review of his nomination. Marc Maron, his “To Leslie” co-star, spoke on a recent episode of his “WTF” podcast.

Maron slammed the Academy for investigating the 41-year-old actress’ nomination because they felt their system was under threat until it was “completely bought by corporate interests in the form of studios.”

He credited Riseborough’s achievement to a grassroots campaign, spurred on by several actors, while claiming that the review had been in place since the Academy felt that independent artists didn’t deserve their attention unless they saw how it was achieved.

At the time, the 59-year-old insisted that Riseborough’s nomination would not be overturned because the campaign was genuine and the “Birdman” actor was “not eligible.”
