Angel Olsen Gets Introspective On New EP ‘Forever Means’

Time is not a concept for musician Angel Olsen!

The country indie singer has been releasing music since 2010, and she’s not slowing down now. The “Hi-Five” singer announced her new album and first single on Tuesday morning, Olsen’s first new release in nearly a year.

There is no doubt that the last few years have been difficult for many people. The 36-year-old has tackled many important themes of self-reflection and loneliness inspired by the pandemic in his last few releases. His 2021 duet with Sharon Van Etten, “Like I Used To,” explores the complex feelings caused by the COVID-related quarantine.

Olsen chronicled life moments and experiences on last year’s “Big Time,” documenting feelings inspired by the grief of losing her mother, who came out a year early. He was not deterred by any possible consequences from detailing such personal subjects in the LP.

“When I sit down with my catalog,” Olsen explained to The New Yorker last year, “one thing I’m very grateful for is that I just write about real life. Not everybody wants that in music, and not everybody likes that in music. It took me years to stop thinking about it because I can be so intense. I’ll meet someone new, and they’ll be like, ‘Wow.”

The idea of having endless time and the thought of not having an expiration date in any area of our lives, inspired Olsen when he started thinking about his latest project.

“I’m somewhere on a journey,” he explains, of his thought process. “stopped for a few days and wandered around town, and I thought, ‘What does forever mean?’ “What are the things I’m looking for in friendship or love, and how can it be achieved forever if we’re always changing?,” Olsen continued through a statement per Consequence.

Inside The Inspiration For EP’s First Single, ‘Nothing’s Free’

These existential questions are undoubtedly rooted in relationships with our sense of self and self-esteem; Looking inward inspired Olsen to write the first single from “Forever Means,” which consisted of songs left over from the previous record.

The single’s significance to Olsen felt “more soulful than the direction of the record,” he said, referring to “Big Time.” “It comes from a different place. For me, when I wrote it, I began to understand my identity and my sexuality. I opened myself up in a new way.”

Olsen also released a lyrical music video for “Nothing’s Free” on her social media accounts as well, with a link to pre-order the EP, which will be released next month.

According to Olsen official Twitter announcementthe single was co-produced with Jonathan Wilson, and features a horn arrangement by Dan Higgins.

“SO EXCITED FOR IT ANGEL!!!,” one fan reply to the tweet. “I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, your music means the world to me <3"
