On Saturday, the Peter Mayhew Foundation announced via social media that Angie Mayhew, wife of the late Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew, has died.
The 7’2″ actor is best known for playing the beloved “Star Wars” character Chewbacca from the original 1977 film “Star Wars: A New Hope” to 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” where he ceded the role to the 6’11” Finn. actor Joonas Suotamo, who took over the role for the remainder of the sequel trilogy. Mayhew sadly passed away in April 2019.

The Peter Foundation used social media to share photos of the late couple posing together for a photo.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Angie Mayhew. After complications from double heart valve replacement surgery, she has joined her lover, Peter Mayhew, in the stars. His kindness, love, and generosity will always be remembered,” read the message posted to the two Twitter and Instagram.
Many Star Wars fans expressed shock and surprise at his sudden passing. “When they did Star Wars weekend at Disney’s Hollywood studios in Orlando, she was always in the background quietly supporting Peter,” recalls one fan. “It is very important before the hip and knee replacement. I am saddened by our loss but thankful he is not in pain.”

“I’m sorry for losing you. I’ve always been a big Star Wars fan so obviously a big Peter fan. I actually met him once at Disney World,” shared another follower. “I love the children’s books he writes and the charities he creates, but I’m sorry to hear about his wife. Love to the family.”
Earlier this year, Angie hit the headlines when she struggled to get her late husband’s Star Wars memorabilia back from auction. He wanted the item, which had been auctioned without his knowledge, to be displayed at Holocron Toys for all Star Wars fans to enjoy for free.
Peter and Angie Created The Peter Mayhew Foundation To Help Others In 2012
Peter and Angie tied the knot in 1999. Not long after, the famous actor left his home in Yorkshire in Northern England for Texas. In January 2012, Peter received approval to start The Peter Mayhew Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the illness, pain, suffering and financial toll caused by traumatic life events.
The charity provides resources directly to children and adults in need and helps many charities, including the Star Wars 501st Legion and Rebel Legion costume groups, to provide support where needed.
Around Thanksgiving 2022, the Peter Mayhew Foundation shared a photo of staff members posing outside the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. “We are very grateful to this wonderful person! Last Thursday our team left San Antonio, Texas with a sixteen foot box truck filled with Star Wars toys,” they wrote in the caption.
“We partnered with @official501st to drop these toys at Children’s Hospitals in Dallas, Albuquerque, Tucson, Phoenix and ended up at @chocchildrens in Orange, CA where we were joined by thekatyo from The Mandalorian and Aayla Secura herself: @amyallen_jedi,” they added. “It’s all made possible because of the continued toy donation from @HolocronToyStore. Thank you!”

The last tweet from the Peter Mayhew Foundation came on March 30, where they showed the Mandalorian and other costumed figures appearing at a Holocron Toys event in Fort Worth, Texas.

Just a few days earlier, Angie posted with Star Wars actor Ahmed Best. Although Best is best known for playing Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy, he recently reappeared in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq, the Jedi responsible for rescuing Grogu.
