Anguished husband of poet Molly Brodak reveals her heartbreaking final diary entry before suicide: ‘Goodbye to my body’

A poet who appeared on “The Great American Baking Show” wrote a heartbreaking final journal entry about feeling “such clarity” before killing herself – after first saying “goodbye to my body” and making love one last time to her husband.

Molly Brodak, who appeared on the ABC series in 2019, detailed her final moments before her death on March 8, 2020, after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

“Bathing, saying goodbye to my body,” wrote the 39-year-old poet in the last entry shared by the Los Angeles Times.

“We eat grilled halloumi and make love after dinner and watch our favorite things on TV.

“Feel like I can see everything clearly this morning,” Brodak wrote. “I’ve been pretending all my life.”

Her apparent clarity and composure didn’t help her distraught husband, Blake Butler, who shared a diary entry in “Molly,” a book about the incredible trauma of losing a loved one to suicide.

In it, he recalls finding his wife’s body after returning from a run and seeing a suicide note taped to their front door in Atlanta, Georgia.

“How he made sure I was going to be the one to go and find his body was another kind of terror in itself,” Butler wrote in the book, quoted in the LA Times.

When Brodak appeared on Season 3 of “The Great American Baking Show” in 2019, the same year she started her home baking business, she was the most beloved contestant, according to author Joseph Earp, who wrote a moving tribute after her death.

“Everyone is very humble and nice to each other, but Brodak displays what I see as a unique amusement and wink at the chaos going on around him – the host’s big smile, the artificial injection high,” he wrote.

However, the Detroit-born poet had long “struggled with mental illness and lifelong trauma,” her husband said.

That included a troubled childhood, with his father, Joseph Brodak, sent to prison for the first time for several bank robberies in 1994, when Brodak was just 13, more busted in 2009.

“Molly is troubled – that much is clear,” her husband wrote of her struggle with mental illness that was evident even when they met in 2010, a year before she moved to Atlanta in 2011 to take part in a fellowship at Emory University, where she would later teach.

“Death seemed to be always on Molly’s mind,” Butler wrote — saying that he warned her when they moved in together, “If there’s ever a gun in this house, I’ll use it on myself.”

It is unclear how Brodak killed himself. She left some unpublished poems, which her husband planned to share after death.
