Animal shelter full of holiday cheers as kennels cleared out with a single stray cat left: ‘True miracle’

A Pennsylvania animal shelter is bursting with holly cheer this Christmas season after cleaning out its enclosure.

The Adams County SPCA in Gettysburg has a lot to celebrate after cleaning out their kennels for two weeks, except for one stray that came in “a little while ago,” staff announced on Facebook.

“Our community is on the rise again! This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA is empty let alone at Christmas time” the post said.

“It’s a real miracle!”

“To say we’re thrilled is an understatement!”

They celebrated by posting pictures of smiling staff kneeling and standing in the open doors of a row of empty kennels.

The shelter adopted nearly 600 animals into new homes this year and reunited 125 with their owners, staff said.

Since their shelter is now empty, they announced that they will be taking in animals from a nearby barn to help “relieve some of their stress.”

The Post has reached out to the Adams County SPCA for comment.

About 6.3 million animals are brought to shelters each year, according to the ASPCA.

About 4.1 million animals are adopted each year, while about 920,000 are euthanized.

A shelter near Albany, New York, is “over full,” according to Mohawk Hudson Humane Society CEO Ashley Jeffrey Bouck.

The number of animals entering shelters began to increase in 2021, after a pandemic-related decline reversed. Adoptions do not keep pace with the flood of pets, leaving shelters filled with animals.

Shelter Animals Count, a national shelter statistics database, estimates that the US shelter population will increase by nearly a quarter of a million animals by 2023.

“The economy right now is really challenging for a lot of families,” said Kim Alboum of the Bissell Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization.

“And with the housing crisis, people are losing their homes and having to downsize or move in with others. And this is a recipe for disaster for people with larger dogs.
