Actress Anna Kendrick has opened up about the similarities between her role in “Alice, Darling” and her previous relationships.
Over the years, the actor has starred in several films such as “Pitch Perfect,” “Table 19,” “A Simple Favor,” and “The Day Shall Come.” However, landing a role in the upcoming thriller drama feels different because of the plot repeating his previous abusive relationship.
The actress revealed that although she initially blamed herself for the dysfunction in her relationship, she later came to see that her then-boyfriend was to blame. Kendrick added that settling the affair was “the hardest task of his adult life.”

In an interview with Many peopleKendrick discusses why her role in the upcoming Canadian American thriller “Alice, Darling” resonates with her so much.
Kendrick plays a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship in the emotional drama directed by Mary Nighy and written by Alanna Francis. He became an unsuspecting participant in an intervention carried out by two of his closest friends, Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku.

The actor revealed to Many people that when he got the part, he had just left a relationship that paralleled the film’s plot. She realized then that the writing reflected the inner turmoil she had experienced throughout the relationship.
“I came out of personal experience with emotional and psychological abuse,” she told the publication. “I think my rep sent it to me because he knew what I was going through and sent it along. Because he was like, ‘This kind of speaks to everything you’ve been talking to me about.'”

‘I Like And Trust This Person’
Kendrick described the relationship as abusive, saying she had given everything, even at the expense of herself, only to be hurt by her ex-boyfriend, who declined to be named.
“I was in a situation where I loved and trusted this person more than I trusted myself,” he added. “So when that person tells you that you have a distorted sense of reality and that you’re impossible and all the things you think are happening aren’t happening, your life becomes very confusing very quickly.”

Fortunately for the actress, she was able to see that the troubled relationship wasn’t her fault, which gave her an edge on her journey to recovery.
He explained, “In the end, I had the unique experience of knowing that everything I thought was happening was actually happening. So I had this kind of springboard for feelings and recovery that a lot of people don’t get.”

‘Alice, Darling’ Helps Anna Kendrick Normalize What Happened
“Alice, Darling” gives Kendrick a chance to revisit his past relationships. It also helped him better understand what had happened.
“It feels very different because I’ve, frankly, seen a lot of movies about abusive or toxic relationships, and it doesn’t look like what happened to me,” Kendrick said. “It kind of helped me normalize and minimize what was happening to me, because I thought, ‘Well, if I was in an abusive relationship, it would look like that.'”
The “Up In The Air” star added that her “recovery was very challenging” and was the “hardest task of her adult life.” She also insists that sometimes her body still thinks it’s her fault even though she’s well aware that the relationship’s dysfunction was solely due to her boyfriend at the time.
Anna Kendrick Is Not Dangerous To Re-Traumatize
In the interview, Kendrick shared that he was in no danger of reinventing himself by taking on such a script. He revealed that the film’s production started a few months after he got the script, and at that time, he was well on his way to recovery.
“It’s still a lot, a few months away,” he said. So I’m in no danger of remaking myself. But yes, it was definitely a unique experience.”

Sharing his experiences on set, Kendrick admitted that he enjoyed bonding with his collaborators and exchanging personal experiences while they worked on the film project.
Katie Bird Nolan, Lindsay Tapscott, Christina Piovesan, and Noah Segal produced “Alice, Darling,” while Kendrick and Sam Tipper-Hale executive produced. On September 11, 2022, the film will make its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
