Netflix is embroiled in a brand new legal dispute as Anna Sorokin’s Ex-Friend, Rachel DeLoache Williams, is suing the streaming service over her appearance in “Inventing Anna.”
The limited series traces the rise and fall of con artist Anna Sorokin, who uses the pseudonym Anna Delvey and pretends to be a German heiress to scam many businesses out of thousands of dollars. Not surprisingly, Sorokin tricked several others in his escape, including his former friend Williams.
The pair argued, and Williams later cooperated with police authorities to help arrest Sorokin. Months after Netflix released “Inventing Anna,” Williams filed a lawsuit against the streaming service, claiming that her representation in the series was defamatory.

follow Many people, a Tennessee man sued Netflix for defamation to express his displeasure with the way he was portrayed in “Making Anna.” Williams’ lawyer, Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, said in an interview with the publication that the series exploited her details and portrayed her as a horrible person.
“The reason why we have to file the case is because Netflix used Rachel’s real name and biographical details, and made her out to be a horrible person, which she is not,” the lawyer said.
The lawsuit filed last Monday in the US District Court of Delaware further underscores the views of Williams and his lawyers, calling out the streaming platform for using a seemingly false narrative to bring the series to life.

It reads in part. “This action would show that Netflix made a deliberate decision for dramatic purposes to show Williams doing or saying things in the Series that portray him as greedy, arrogant, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic,”

Elsewhere in the suit, Williams asked the court to impose “punitive damages” on Netflix, saying that the streaming platform “gave fictional names to many of the real-life protagonists in the Sorokin saga who appeared in the series, but it was unable to pay. Williams the same protection.”
The document continued, “Given the simple alternative of protecting it by using a fictitious name, the decision to use its real name proves Netflix’s intent to damage its reputation, thereby justifying the imposition of punitive damages.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Netflix chose to use Williams’ real details in retaliation for selling its rights to a similar project about Sorokin developed by HBO. For now, it is unclear when the case will be heard in court. Since it made headlines, Netflix has yet to issue an official response to the suit.

Anna Sorokin’s Relationship With Her Former Friend

Williams wrote an essay for Vanity Fair in 2018 where she revealed that she first met Sorokin in the lounge of a fancy restaurant. The pair immediately connected and became close friends within a short period of time.
In Williams’ words, “he strolled into my life in Gucci shoes and Celine glasses, and showed me a world of enchantment, without the friction of hotel life and Le Coucou dinners and infrared saunas and Moroccan vacations.”
Williams also revealed that Sorokin paid most of their expenses on the way out. However, things between the couple soured after Sorokin allegedly left Williams with a $62,000 tab while they were on vacation in Morocco.
Williams later assisted police in building a case against Sorokin, which led to the fraudster’s arrest in 2017. She later wrote a book published by Simon & Schuster “My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress.”

Although the jury in Sorokin’s trial did not find him guilty of stealing from Williams, Sorokin was sentenced to prison on eight counts, including three counts of first-, second- and third-degree grand larceny, in addition to theft of services. .
Throughout his various schemes, he managed to swindle several wealthy New Yorkers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars while receiving free services from various businesses, including hotels. During the run, he also tried to cheat his bank and friends out of millions of dollars.
Sorokin served two years in prison for his crimes and is currently being held in an ICE detention facility after being rearrested for overstaying his visa. His lawyer is currently appealing his impending deportation.
