While doing press for his new thriller Eileen, Hathaway was prompted by a reporter to recall a time when she was surprised or a moment that surprised her. Hathaway remembers an early moment in her career, she was 16 years old and interviewing for an unnamed part.
“I just remembered one of the first questions I was ever asked when I started acting and had to do press was: Are you a good girl or a bad girl?” recalls Hathaway now 40. The actor said he was hesitant to share this story because he often gets backlash from the press. He was afraid of “annoying titles.” Hathaway is tired of regretting her words but also feels it’s a conversation worth bringing up.
Her character is a psychologist in a prison who takes revenge on the inmate’s mother for allowing her husband to abuse her for years. In the book the film is based on, the character goes through mental ups and downs and steps outside the guidelines of his role as a prison psychologist that ends in tragedy.
So is Hathaway saying that she wishes she had the guts to take deadly revenge on the reporter? Obviously not, but he says he wishes he had the gall that his character had back then.

Hathaway at that time and age was incapable of answering such a question or refusing and stating that she was uncomfortable. We’ve also seen the press bash Hathaway just for being herself (remember the Oscar hosting gig?).
The novel is important to the actor because that is all, the strength of the character. Author, Ottessa Moshfegh was also on hand to ensure her novel was presented as she wished.
He adapted his novel into a screenplay and hoped someone as strong as Hathaway would play the role. When Ocean 8 actors signed up, Moshfegh was grateful, and Hathaway felt like she won a prize.
“I saw a study of the complications of women that struck me very, very deeply, and I felt that Will was a reliable filmmaker to tell complicated stories, especially about women. And that meant a lot to me,” Hathaway said.
